5 Shocking Medical Device Crimes—Taylor

Vinnie Lysander Taylor

In May 2016, Vinnie Lysander Taylor pleaded guilty to charges of "receiving and selling industrial grade silicone, but representing to customers that it was medical grade silicone," according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

The DOJ release noted that Taylor admitted that though he was not licensed to do so, he delivered silicone injections into customers' buttocks between 2008 and December 2014. He told customers who were seeking fuller buttocks that this silicone was medical grade, but he admitted in his plea agreement that he had bought 152 gallons of food grade liquid silicone over that timeframe. That liquid silicone, polydimethylsiloxane, was stored in plastic bottles, making them adulterated and misbranded.

For these silicone injections, Taylor charged customers $800-1000 for the first injections and $350-$800 for followup injections; these injections made Taylor at least $1,598,000, according to the DOJ.

One of Taylor's customers died two days after an injection and autopsy revealed her death was from acute and chronic respiratory failure from a pulmonary embolization caused by a foreign substance. Fluid removed from the victim's buttocks was found to be polydimethylsiloxane.

Taylor agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the dismissal of first degree murder charges. If the Prince George's County Circuit Court accepts the plea agreement, Taylor is expected to be sentenced to 12-15 years in prison, according to the press release.

Taylor is scheduled to be sentenced August 19, 2016.
