To reflect the growing significance of the spine market, DePuy Acromed Inc. (Raynham, MA), a Johnson & Johnson company, has changed its name to DePuy Spine.

The company said it wants the new name to convey its “absolute focus on new technologies that meet the needs of spine-care professionals and their patients around the world.”

In 2003 alone, the company introduced 10 major new product lines. One, Cellect, developed with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, is the first minimally invasive device to use a needle to collect bone marrow cells from the hip area and process them for grafting onto the spine. The technique is expected to cause significantly fewer complications than traditional bone harvesting used in spinal fusion surgery. “This new technology will serve as a key platform for us as we develop other products that enhance spine surgery and improve the quality of life for the millions of people who suffer from painful spine and back conditions,” said Earl R. Fender, worldwide president of DePuy Spine.
