A thermoformed package designed for an orthopedic system has won an award from the Society of Plastic Engineers.

A thermoformer of medical and electronic packaging has won an award from the Society of Plastic Engineers. Prent Corp. (Janesville, WI; www. prent.com) took first place in the Most Unique Package category. The winning package was designed to hold the Tempfix external fixation system, which was developed by Depuy Orthopaedics.

The package consists of five individual thermoformed parts. Each of the three modular inner trays carries one of four different fixation devices, along with tools for its application. One universal cover snap-fits onto each of the modular inner trays, while one universal outer tray holds and protects any of the tray-cover combinations. Features include formed snaps, stabilizing feet, snap rings, and formed grips.

Package integrity was very important in the design of the trays. "Our goal in making this package was to make it easy for the orthopedic surgeon or nurse to access the components," says Joe Pregont, president and CEO.
