Live from MD&M East: Momentive Launches High-Tear-Strength LSR

A new high-tear-strength liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is now available to medical device OEMs, Momentive Performance Materials announced today at MD&M East in New York City. Suited for such applications as sleep apnea masks, catheter components, and seals and stoppers for single-use syringes, the Silopren LSR4600-series materials can be employed in products exposed to high mechanical and shear stresses.

In addition to offering high tear strength, the material cures faster than the company's standard product line, according to the company. It is also optimized for molding because the high-tear-strength properties of the material help to avoid defects or tears during processing. Additional properties of the material include the absence of softeners and other common polymer adjuvants, hypoallergenic nature, good chemical and thermal resistance, and resistance to mold and bacterial growth.

Along with launching the Silopren LSR4600-series materials, Momentive is taking advantage of the MD&M East platform to publicize its 2009 win of a Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation of the Year award for its StatSil antimicrobial elastomer technology. The silver-based technology can be incorporated into a variety of medical devices, including catheters and IV components for infection prevention. The company also is promoting its MSC2631 silicone slip polymer coating, which is provided primarily for coating needles and similar metal products. Although the coating can be applied to stainless-steel products, it is optimized for tungsten parts as a result of shifting market needs.
