Let’s Talk Medtech

Let's Talk SSI's & Orthopedic Surgery During the Pandemic

Dr. Antonia Chen IMG_Nov52021at94107AM.jpg
Dr. Antonia Chen shares her insights as a practicing orthopedic surgeon on why antibacterial sutures should be standard in every U.S. operating room.

Once upon a time in healthcare, it was taboo to talk about surgical site infections (SSI). If you were a surgeon treated SSI and you moved on.

But unfortunately, these infections can be seen in up to 5% of patients undergoing surgery, with potentially catastrophic consequences. The impacts are not just born by patients, their families and physicians: the cost of these infections to the U.S. healthcare system is estimated in the billions.

Dr. Antonia Chen, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) joins MD+DI’s Let’s Talk Medtech to discuss the role antibacterial sutures can play curbing SSI and how Ethicon’s solution is effective. She’s also touches on being an orthopedic surgeon during a pandemic during this incredible conversation.
