(Providence, RI) recently completed the design and development of the ThermoSuit system for Life Recovery Systems (LRS; Alexandria, LA) The LRS ThermoSuit system is designed to rapidly reduce the core body temperature of a stroke or heart attack victim to 32–34°C by circulating a flow of ice water directly onto a comatose patient's skin. Since the device will be used in the high stress environment of the emergency room, the biggest design challenge was to embed the required technologies into a simple set of user interfaces so that little or no training was required. The net result is that installation of the disposable suit and pumping cartridge takes only three steps, and the typical treatment requires only two buttons to be pressed. Embedded logic controls, a clear and simple color graphic user interface, and intuitive assembly of the disposable to the capital were the main points of focus during design.
