The tabletop instrument facilitates friction testing

The FTS 5000 system from Harland Medical Systems LLC tests the performance of lubricious coatings.

The performance of lubricious coatings on catheters, guidewires, pacing leads, and other similar medical products can be tested with a new device. The FTS 5000 system from Harland Medical Systems LLC (Eden Prairie, MN) creates, runs, and analyzes friction tests. The system leads the operator through setting up a test protocol, storing the protocol in memory, running the test sample, and analyzing the results. 

Software built into the unit facilitates the creation, modification, and storing of test protocols. The operator fixtures the sample in the tester's collet, selects or creates a test protocol, and moves the transport to the desired starting position. A graph and table display results in real time as the test progresses.

The FTS 5000 has its own 850-mHz single-board computer with a 10.4-in. color touch screen. Test protocols created at remote computers can be imported and test data can be exported via a built-in CDRW drive. The system can also be added to a local area network.
