Surface-Mount Switches

04139p.jpg

Surface-mount switches are offered in six major actuation types. NKK Switches (Scottsdale, AZ; www.nkkswitches.com) designs toggle, push button, slide, DIP slide, DIP rotary, and tactile switches in sizes ranging from ultraminiature to subminiature. The switches are constructed of heat-resistant resins and can be safely subjected to vapor phase and reflow soldering. Logic level electrical capacity is standard in all models; most models feature UL 94 V-0 flammability ratings. The gull-wing terminals conform to standard PC board grid spacing and are molded in and epoxy sealed. Packaging options include tape-reel, stick-tube, and partitioned tray, depending upon series and models.

Nonmagnetic Multipin Connectors

A maker of connectors and interconnection systems has modified its connectors to meet nonmagnetic specifications. The Amphe-Lite series of connectors from Amphenol Industrial Operations (Sidney, NY; www.amphenol-industrial.com) can be used in MRI equipment or other applications requiring the use of nonmagnetic interconnects. The connector housings are made from corrosion-resistant composite materials and provide a lightweight IP67 rating when mated. Nonmagnetic contacts are available for power, signal, and coax applications ranging from a single twinax contact up to 128 size 22D contacts for crimping 22–28 AWG in a variety of insert combinations. Standard crimp contacts can be terminated to discrete wires and PC tail contacts are available for termination to printed circuit boards or flex circuitry. The connectors are UL- and RoHS-compliant.

Low-Profile Rotary Stage

An ultralow profile rotary stage with integrated ER collet chuck provides automated material handling capability for a range of materials and applications. The ACS LP series rotary stage from Aerotech Inc. (Pittsburgh, PA; www.aerotech.com) uses collets that support tube diameters ranging from 0.5 to 16 mm. The collet is retained with a threaded cap that enables quick changeover, and is configured in a fail-safe, normally closed mode where full clamping force is applied when no air pressure is present. The stage uses direct-drive brushless motor technology for quick acceleration and high throughput. A noncontact rotary-union design is employed for maintenance-free operation with less friction and reduced inertia. The reduced inertia allows higher peak acceleration and reduces position error during laser machining operations.

Hypotube

A hypotube is designed to assist catheter manufacturers improve kink resistance. Creganna Medical Devices (Galway, Ireland; www.creganna.com) offers the PoleVault hypotube as an alternative to conventional hypotubes. It can be customized for use in thin-wall catheters. By maintaining current kink resistance levels, the hypotube’s inner diameter can be increased. The hypotube does not assume the shape of its packaging dispenser upon removal. This feature gives manufacturers the option of reducing dispenser size. The product is also less likely to be damaged during in-process handling and assembly, according to the company.

Wire EDM Services

A provider of wire machining services has added equipment and expanded its headquarters. Xact Wire EDM Corp. (Waukesha, WI; www.xactedm.com) offers wire EDM services and electrolysis-free cutting. Capabilities include die components, mold details and electrodes, small-wire diameters, 30°–plus taper angles, automatic threading, and auxiliary rotary spindle EDM. The company also offers file transfer and translation, CMM, video inspection, and small-hole EDM. A laser-marking machine is available for precision parts marking.
