In an effort to improve its diabetes management tools, Pelikan Technologies Inc. (Palo Alto, CA) acquired Inventus BioTec GmbH & Co. KG (Munster, Germany), an electrochemical sensor supplier. Pelikan supplies handheld diagnostic and monitoring products for various medical conditions.

“We now own all technologies and components necessary for the development of our advanced, fully integrated glucose-monitoring device,” says Dirk Boecker, MD, PhD, president and CEO of Pelikan. “Glucose sensors are a common and necessary technology in the diabetes-care market.”

The German supplier, which was renamed Albatros Technologies GmbH & Co. KG, will also provide Pelikan with its sensor manufacturing processes and plants. Pelikan is working on combining its Pelikan Sun lancing device with Inventus's glucose measurement technology in order to create a less-painful, one-step method for people with diabetes.
