Meet the 2005 MDEA Jurors

The Medical Design Excellence Awards are as meaningful and esteemed as they are because of the jurors who present them. This year's 13 jurors bring to the awards an extensive range of knowledge and experience from across the medical device spectrum. Areas of expertise include product design, clinical engineering, biomedical engineering, orthopedics, neuro- and behavioral sciences, quality assurance, biomaterials research, nursing, ophthalmology, operations management, biomedical informatics, human factors, and product development.

Tor Alden is principal at HS Design Inc. (Gladstone, NJ), a full-service product development firm specializing in the medical and healthcare marketplace with a focus on user-driven design. His experience includes more than 15 years in product design and corporate branding, during which he has received more than 20 design and utility patents. He also serves on the advisory board of the department of design at Kean University.

Jeff L. Butler is principal engineer at Sysmed Enterprises Inc. (Richardson, TX), a firm that offers clinical engineering consulting to surgery centers, hospitals, and other outpatient facilities. The company also provides expert witness services in cases of medical device incidents and accidents. Before starting his private consulting practice, Butler served for 14 years as vice president and COO of Baylor Biomedical Services, an FDA-registered medical device manufacturer and refurbisher in Dallas. He belongs to the National Society of Professional Engineers and American College of Forensic Examiners.

Yadin B. David, PhD, is director of the biomedical engineering and television services department at Texas Children's Hospital (Houston). He is also the president of Biomedical Engineering Consultants (Houston), a firm that provides medical technology management and strategic technology planning services. David has headed hospital biomedical engineering departments for 25 years. In addition, he holds an academic appointment at the Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and is an adviser to the World Health Organization.

Jay R. Goldberg, PhD, is director of the healthcare technologies management program at Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee). He has been a participant in the development of new products in the GI,urology, orthopedics, and dentistry fields. Goldberg also serves as chairman of the ASTM subcommittee on urological devices and materials.

Walter Greenleaf, is a research scientist with a PhD in neuro- and biobehavioral sciences from Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA). His current research, writing, and presentations focus on the use of simulation technology to improve physical medicine and neurological and cognitive rehabilitation. He is president of Greenleaf Medical (Palo Alto, CA), a firm that develops new diagnostic and analytic technologies for medicine. A scientific adviser and grant reviewer for the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Institutes of Health, he was also a founding board member of the University of California Center for Disabilities.

Dan Haumschild, PhD, is the clinical and development quality assurance group manager at Beckman Coulter Inc. (BCI; Fullerton, CA). There, he directs worldwide clinical studies and development quality assurance for BCI's immunoassays and nucleic acid testing business center. His professional expertise encompasses physiology, ultrasound, laser Doppler, drug delivery, heart valves, endovascular therapies, orthopedics, wound healing, brachytherapy, ventricular-assist devices, transmyocardial revascularization and percutaneous transmyocardial revascularization, and in vitro diagnostics. Prior to joining BCI, Haumschild was involved in research and clinical studies at United States Surgical Corp., Pfizer/Schneider (USA) Inc., Medtronic Inc., and TSI Inc.

William A. Hyman, ScD, is professor and interim head of the department of biomedical engineering at Texas A&M University (TAMU; College Station, TX). In addition, he is a faculty member in material science and engineering at TAMU and a participating faculty member in TAMU's sports medicine institute and the center for microencapsulation and drug delivery. He is also senior scientist in the biomaterials research center at the University of Texas at Houston. Hyman has served as a consultant for FDA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health.

Denise M. Korniewicz, RN, DNSc, is a professor and associate dean for research and doctoral programs at the University of Miami School of Nursing (Miami), where she also serves as director of the nursing school's research center. She gained experience in the management of critical patients as an emergency room charge nurse before undertaking an academic career that has included professorships at the Georgetown University schools of nursing and medicine and the University of Maryland. She is a registered nurse in Maryland, Michigan, and Washington, DC, and holds a certificate in executive management in higher education from Carnegie Mellon University.

Eliot S. Lazar, MD, is principal of ElCon Medical (Buffalo, NY), a consulting firm that provides an end-user medical and surgical perspective on medical device market needs and requirements, medical technology trends and developments, and funding strategies. An ophthalmologist specializing in anterior segment pathology and surgery, Lazar has several university appointments. He holds patents on intraretinal delivery and withdrawal instruments, has published numerous articles, and regularly presents research findings at medical society meetings. His professional memberships include the American Medical Association, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Mark S. Vreeke, PhD, is senior partner at Rational Systems LLC (Granger, IN), a firm that has installed a sophisticated operations management system for natural gas supplier Panhandle Energy (Houston). Before forming Rational Systems, Vreeke was a senior research scientist at Bayer Corp. (Pittsburgh), where he was responsible for new reagent development in Bayer's self-testing segment and coordinated efforts to incorporate new reagents into a next-generation sensor platform. Vreeke has also held positions at SpectRx, TheraSense Inc., Eltron Research Inc., and Heller and Co. Vreeke is a member of the editorial advisory board of IVD Technology.



Matthew B. Weinger, MD, is a professor of anesthesiology, biomedical informatics, and medical education at Vanderbilt University (Nashville) and a staff physician in the Middle Tennessee VA Healthcare System. He is director of the Vanderbilt Center for Perioperative Health Services Research and codirector of the Center for Improving Patient Safety. Weinger has also taught anesthesiology at Stanford University and University of California at San Diego.

Michael E. Wiklund is an independent human factors engineering consultant who works predominantly with companies seeking to develop safe, effective, usable, and appealing medical products. He is also an adjunct associate professor in the engineering psychology program of the department of mechanical engineering at Tufts University (Medford, MA). A contributing editor of MD&DI magazine since 1993, Wiklund has published numerous articles and books.

Stephen B. Wilcox, PhD, has more than 15 years of product development experience. He is the founder and a principal of Design Science Consulting Inc. (Philadelphia), a product research and human factors consulting group. He has taught human factors and research methods in the design department of Carnegie Mellon University. Wilcox is chair of the human factors professional interest section of IDSA.
