Access to Innovation

Headquartered in the heart of what has come to be known as Catheter Valley, AngioDynamics Inc. (Queensbury, NY) develops and manufactures devices for the minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of cancer and peripheral vascular disease by interventional radiologists, surgeons, and other physicians. The company's position as a broad-based player focused specifically on peripheral interventional devices and interventional oncology makes it unique among its competitors.

AngioDynamics has capitalized on the major market shift from open surgery to minimally invasive procedures by focusing on the needs of the growing numbers of interventional radiologists–physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments performed using imaging guidance.

AngioDynamics was founded in 1988 and has since grown into a Nasdaq-listed public company with 565 employees and a total market capitalization of more than $300 million. Among its latest strategic moves, in January 2007, AngioDynamics entered the growing interventional oncology market through its $220 million acquisition of RITA Medical Systems Inc. (Fremont, CA).

With the addition of RITA's complementary products, AngioDynamics ever-expanding product line now includes radio-frequency ablation systems, vascular access devices, angiographic products and accessories, dialysis products, angioplasty products, drainage products, thrombolytic products, embolization devices, and venous therapy systems. This targeted but diverse range of products gives AngioDynamics a unique strategic position in its market space.

The company's angiographic products and accessories are used during peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures. They permit interventional physicians to reach targeted locations within the vascular system to deliver contrast media for visualization, and to deliver therapeutic agents and devices such as stents or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) balloons.

AngioDynamics' hemodialysis catheters provide vascular access for hemodialysis. Its VenaCure products are used in endovascular laser procedures, while its PTA dilatation catheters are marketed to open blocked blood vessels and hemodialysis access sites using a catheter that has a balloon tip.

The company's image-guided vascular access products use imaging equipment to guide the placement of catheters for the delivery of short-term drug therapies, such as chemotherapeutic agents and antibiotics, into the central circulatory system. AngioDynamics' thrombolytic catheter products are used to deliver thrombolytic agents—drugs that dissolve blood clots—in hemodialysis access grafts, arteries, veins, and surgical bypass grafts. Its drainage catheters percutaneously drain abscesses and other fluid collections.
