Burkert (Irvine, CA; www.burkert-usa.com) has announced the formation of a Micro-fluidic Systems division. Microfluidics technology enables control of the flow of small amounts of liquids or gases in a miniaturized system. This new division will service OEMs in the medical, laboratory, and chemical industries through the development of components that aid in this particular technology.

Burkert manufactures products that comply with market demand for the controlled and automated handling of ultrasmall fluid quantities through the automation and miniaturization of medical devices such as valves and pumps. Microfluidic components are integral in many medical procedures, from dialysis to anesthesia.

The Micro-fluidic Systems division's standard product line consists of valves, sensors, and pumps ranging in size from 10 to 35 mm. Included in this line is the Type 127 miniature rocker solenoid valve, which features an isolated diaphragm that separates contaminated or aggressive media in the valve's body from the actuator. The Micro-fluidic Systems line is available with a variety of product options, with varying ranges in pressure, orifice size, body style, and seal materials.

"A key strength for Micro-fluidic Systems is our extensive and diverse product range. Customers don't have to purchase an overengineered and overly priced product from us because that's all we have," says Craig Occhiato, Micro-fluidic Systems market segment manager. "Instead, Micro-fluidic Systems offers numerous options that allow customers to purchase the exact products they need for their specific applications."
