These days, one doesn't have to look very far to find examples of industries that are struggling. Pessimism about the current economic malaise and bleak rumors about particular companies (justified or otherwise) are filling Internet chat rooms and the blogs of self-appointed experts, crowding out almost every glimmer of hope for recovery.

Well, here's some sunny news for a change.

This issue of MX celebrates the excellence of an industry that works hard and continues to represent the best that humanity can offer. Forget for the moment the inevitable failures and foibles that can undermine the efforts of any individual, company, industry, or nation. The bottom line is this: the medical technology community is devoted to improving human life, and it does so day after day, year after year, in good times and, well, times like the present.

But don't take my word for it. Check out the "2008 Medtech Executive Profiles", our annual feature describing the contributions of medtech executives who have gone above and beyond for their companies and the industry as a whole. Or see MX's annual report on the Medical Design Excellence Awards, "Innovation Celebration" (page 36), which highlights nearly three dozen winning products and the companies that created them.

Need more evidence? How about the vote of confidence expressed by panelists in this issue's roundtable, "Medtech M&A Trends", who overwhelmingly confirm the ongoing vitality and financial health of the medical device industry. Think the medtech bubble is ready to burst? Consider the 111-year history of BD, as described by the company's chairman, president, and CEO Edward J. Ludwig, in this issue's cover story, "Strategic Responsibility".

Each of this issue's articles offers a snapshot of the optimism and commitment that typify the medical device industry. And there is much more in the expanded online versions available for this issue. Consider these articles MX's congratulatory gifts—after all, you've earned them.
