A team of researchers at the University of Florida (UF; Gainesville, FL) is investigating the possible dangerous effects that nanotechnology could have on living cells and the environment. The results of such research could have implications for the future of medical device development.
The effects and properties of many metals and materials are known. But the safety of these materials once they take the nanoparticle form often is unclear. Agencies have been exploring whether specific regulations related to nanotechnology should be established, and the role of research could be crucial in determining what steps must be taken.
The UF Nanotoxicology Group, composed of a small group of faculty and students from the university's engineering, medical, and veterinary colleges, is working on eight projects to test the effects of nanoparticles. Funding is being provided by the university, National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Air Force.
