A company’s extrusion lab is engineered to support new applications in medical tubing technology, including higher production rates for commodity products and tighter tolerances for catheters. The extrusion line is equipped for R&D processes ranging from screw design to testing the extrudability of specific polymers, such as flexible PVC, PEEK, Pebax, fluoropolymers, and other medical-grade resins. It features 3/4-in. and 1-in. extruders, two melt pumps, a high-technology vacuum tank, a servo puller-cutter, a conveyor and blow-off table, and an OD-ID-wall gauge system, all controlled via the manufacturer’s supervisory control and data acquisition system. Typically running one week per month for the development of screw designs, process controls, and other technology, the line has been used for such applications as single-lumen microtubes, multilumen tubes, microcatheter trials, new-material development, and coextrusion die development.
