Medtronic is Moving Toward a Fully-Implantable LVAD

Medtronic is developing a fully-implantable left ventricular assist device (LVAD). Current LVAD systems are connected to a driveline cable that extends outside the body to a controller, which is then connected to power sources (AC or DC adapter, batteries). FDA has granted Medtronic a breakthrough device designation for the fully-implantable LVAD.

Look Ma, No Hands: FDA Clears Hands-Free Robot for Percutaneous Procedures

FDA cleared a hands-free robotic system from XACT Robotics designed to combine image-based planning and navigation with insertion and steering of various instruments across an array of clinical applications and indications. The robot was cleared for use during CT-guided percutaneous interventional procedures.
