INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

The Mobile Clinical Assistant by Intel (Beaverton, OR), is designed to enhance patient safety, reduce medication-dispensing errors, and ease staff work loads. It features wireless connectivity to access medical records, a Bluetooth wireless stethoscope, a digital camera to enhance patient charting and progress notes, and several patient-identification verification technologies.

The MedTab by Emano Tec is a washable pocket-sized tablet for the healthcare industry that enables bedside documentation and access to wireless information services anywhere in a clinic. The Bluetooth-enabled product features a high-resolution display and will last an entire shift (12 hours) without recharging. The product offers the screen size and resolution necessary to view and update electronic medical records, yet is still small and light enough to carry in a lab coat pocket. MedTab offers the possibility of a single sign-on system since its software configuration and provisioning are controlled by the IT department and not the end-user.

Voice communications is rapidly giving way to work flow automation through applications that run on wireless voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP) phones. The Cisco 7921 wireless VoIP phone is based on Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g wireless technology and has a large color display that provides room for data applications such as alarm notification, nurse call integration, and even indoor positioning systems.
