The November/December issue of Medical Product Manufacturing News features a Product Update article on medical adhesives. Hot on the Heels of "Adhesives: One Size Does Not Fit All," a supplier has announced the availability of a new generation of hydrocolloid adhesives that offer a range of benefits. Offered by Avery Dennison Specialty Tape Division (Pasadena, CA), the line of ultrathin hydrocolloid adhesives reportedly delivers comfort, flexibility, and longer wear times than comparable materials. In addition, it can be removed gently from the skin while minimizing skin softening beneath the dressing.Thinner than conventional hydrocolloids, the new adhesives surpass the fluid-handling performance of thicker hydrocolloid formulations, according to the manufacturer. They reduce the risk of skin irritation and, when applied to breathable and conformable film carriers, enhance over-the-counter wound- and skin-care products. A special hydrocolloid formulation with a moisturizer is available for dry and cracked skin. The thin hydrocolloid technology is currently undergoing stability and safety testing for a number of potential professional wound-care, stoma-care, and surgical applications.
