The staff of MD&DI is pleased to introduce Michael E. Wiklund as its latest addition to the Editorial Advisory Board. With more than 20 years of experience in hands-on user-interface design and evaluation, Wiklund is a noted expert in human factors. Wiklund has often acted in a board member capacity behind the scenes during his long-term service to MD&DI. He has authored more than 50 articles for the publication over the past 14 years.
Wiklund serves as president of Wiklund Research & Design Inc., based in Concord, MA. There, he leads the firm's human factors consulting practice, which specializes in the design and evaluation of user interfaces for medical devices.
“My client work includes developing and implementing user-centered design strategies, providing human factors training to design departments, helping product development teams form a user-interface design vision, designing and evaluating user-interface design concepts, and conducting usability tests,” Wiklund explains.
Wiklund participates in national and international human factors standards development efforts and frequently lectures on human factors at national conferences. He also writes extensively on how to make medical devices safe, effective, usable, and appealing.
Wiklund received a BS in civil engineering from Tufts University (Medford, MA) in 1979 and an MS in engineering design (human factors) from Tufts in 1984. He is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and is a Certified Human Factors Professional. He serves as chair of the medical interest section of the Industrial Designers Society of America. Wiklund has twice chaired the jury of Canon Communications's Medical Design Excellence Awards.
