Venture capital propels many medtech ideas to market, and this last year has been a strong one in terms of investment. According to EY’s latest report, venture capital investment in medical device companies was up 34% from June 2020 to June 2021.

The dollar amounts are impressive. GlobalData reported that medical device cross border venture financing deals reached $2.5bn in North America in Q2 2021, while such deals totaled $1.4bn in Europe in Q2 2021. Noom was the fundraising leader in North America with $540m venture financing, while CMR Surgical reached $600m in venture financing, GlobalData reported.

To help medtech innovators better understand venture capital funding, MD&M East will host the panel discussion, Understanding the Venture Capital Process - Funding Your Next Device, Tuesday, December 7th at Medtech Education Theater. Moderated by MD+DI editor Daphne Allen, the discussion will feature Salvatore Viscomi, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Goodcell; Bruce Lichorowic, President & CEO, Galen Robotics; and David Vogel, Managing Partner, Kayon Partners.

The panel brings together seasoned healthcare, medtech, and technology professionals with experience raising funds and building businesses. Lichorowic is CEO of Galen Robotics, a firm developing a single-platform robotic solution for otolaryngology and neurosurgery; Viscomi is a physician and leads Goodcell, which is developing a membership platform for curated blood tests for proactive screening, genetic testing, and biomaterial preservation; and Vogel, who has served as an investor/board member for many companies, is currently manager member of Velocity Equity Partners, which invests in growth equity and early-stage ventures in digital media, technology, and industrial sectors.

The panelists will review various funding options like angel investors, government programs, corporate investors, SPACs, and opportunity zones. They’ll touch upon funding dilemmas often faced by medtech companies and how to avoid the “valley of death,” that period of time from receipt of initial capital to revenue generation. They will also examine strategies that have worked and haven’t and debate the pandemic’s impact on the funding landscape.
