The six-in-one medtech and advanced manufacturing event welcomed thousands of C-suite executives, engineers, and industry professionals to the 2021 edition. Amidst a challenging year, IM Engineering East, the East Coast's largest medtech and advanced manufacturing event organized by Informa Markets – Engineering, wrapped a successful three-day exhibition and conference held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City from December 7 through 9.

Comprising renowned event brands MD&M EastEastPackAutomation Technology Expo (ATX)Design & Manufacturing (D&M) EastPlastec East, and Quality Expo East, the event celebrated the return to live events and was well-attended by C-suite executives, senior-level engineers, and industry professionals seeking much-needed connection and education.

Thousands of Event Attendees

While attendance figures were lower than pre-pandemic years, this year's more than 4,000 registered attendees represented highly sought-after companies, including Abbott, B Braun Medical, Beckton Dickinson, Bristol Myers Squibb, Caterpillar, Colgate Palmolive, DuPont, Emerson, Estee Lauder, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Konica Minolta, L'Oreal, Mars International, Medtronic, Stryker, among others. Nearly a quarter of attendees were executive level, and 35 percent held engineering titles; combined, the majority of the attendee makeup comprised those in decision-making roles.

"The advanced manufacturing and medtech sectors experienced adversities unlike those faced in quite some time – the need for industry connection and peer-to-peer learning was apparent at this year's event and we could not be more proud to have organized an environment that enables industry advancement," remarked Steve Everly, Group Event Director, IM Engineering East. "Change and progression are born from overcoming such hardships, and it was refreshing to see the companies and thought leaders that are on the forefront of this dynamic industry engaging with content and using the event as a launchpad to source new partners and ink deals as we head into the new year."

Everly continued: "While this year's event was not without its challenges, we are so proud of what we've accomplished and the connections we helped facilitate by connecting our east coast community for the first time in two years."

Industry-Leading Suppliers

Hosting 220 suppliers on the expo floor, the 2021 edition featured world-renowned and highly sought-after manufacturers that are leading change in the medtech, automation, plastics, packaging, design engineering, and quality fields. Notable suppliers seeking buyers at this year's event include Asahi, Intecc, B Braun Medical, Caplugs, Delta Mod Tech, DeRoyal, Diversified Printing Techniques, Foamtec International, Invotec, IPG, Photonics, Nikon, Prent Thermoforming, Qosina, Sintx Technologies, Steris, Tessy, Wildren HR, and Zeiss.

Trend-Focused Education

"Education is paramount to overcoming the vast amount of challenges manufacturers face daily, and this year's conference delivered a healthy combination of forward-looking insights and technical knowledge," said Everly.

Will Healy, Marketing Manager, Americas, at Balluff Worldwide, said, "I gave one presentation, participated on two panels, had powerful conversations with attendees, and got the chance to engage with cool technologies in the exhibits. It was a packed two days! Events like these are hugely powerful for networking, learning, and connecting with your industry." The prominent speaker participated in three sessions that explored:

  • Collaborative robots and smart factories;

  • Attracting the next workforce with automation and digital solutions; and

  • Predictive maintenance on a budget.

Participants at IM Engineering East enjoyed the launch of CannPack East, a conference dedicated to advancing the booming cannabis packaging market, and experiential offerings such as a New York City Beer Tour, Networking Zone, Career Building opportunities, and more.

Following three days of uniting engineers, designers, and decision-makers where they solved problems and moved the manufacturing industry forward, IM Engineering East will transition to a biennial cadence and is scheduled to return to the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City June 13-15, 2023.

In the interim, the event organizers recently announced the launch of IM Engineering South, a multi-day event designed to serve as the leading advanced manufacturing and processing event in the Southeast U.S. region. Slated for June 14-16, 2022, at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, the event was strategically chosen due to the market's density of manufacturing operations and the localized investment by manufacturers in the aerospace, automotive, metal, forest products, logistics, and plastics sectors that are driving economic growth for the entire region.
