Healthcare Reform Could Force Device Manufacturing Offshore

Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick is worried that the medical device tax may hurt his state's economy. The Boston Herald reports that companies such as Zoll Medical have said that healthcare reform could force them to move manufacturing from Massachusetts to an offshore location.

Under the companion reconciliation bill, medical device makers would be subject to a 2.3% tax starting in 2013.

Patrick said that he will work to modify the healthcare bill if the tax is found to hurt Massachusetts's device industry. He's not the only politician worried about medical device jobs. According to, Minnesota representative Erik Paulsen, whose district is home to many manufacturers, is calling for a repeal of the device tax.
