5. St. Jude Medical

St. Jude Medical, based in St. Paul, Minnesota, makes a range of implantable medical devices including pacemakers, defibrillators as well as minimally invasive structural heart products and products for interventional cardiology among other things.

It slashed jobs in 2012 in anticipation of the device tax but as of 2013 it added 818 positions that led employment to balloon to 16,000 as of 2013.
