5 Technologies That Could End Paralysis – The Stand and Transfer System

 First implanted back in 1999, the Stand and Transfer implant system developed by the Cleveland Functional Electronic Stimulation (FES) Center uses a series of muscle- and nerve-based electrodes to stimulate muscles in the lower body. Patients can restore limited movement to their lower extremities using an external control unit. The original, 8-channel unit has recently been upgraded to 24 channels. Paralympian Jennifer French has continued to win medals after receiving the implant and was even able to walk down the aisle at her wedding.
