Haven’t You Heard? Best Buy and Telehealth Are a Thing Now

Large retailers are planting their flags in healthcare with Amazon and Best Buy leading the charge to get into the market.

Somewhere between laptops and the videogame section lies Best Buy’s latest commitment to healthcare. The retail giant – which has outlived many of its competitor, has formed a partnership with telemedicine specialist Tyto Care.

Details of the partnership show that Best Buy will sell Israel based Tyto Care’s handheld examination device. The company said the TytoHome technology is now available exclusively on BestBuy.com for all customers and in select Minnesota Best Buy stores, with in-store availability coming soon in North Dakota, South Dakota, California and Ohio.

TytoHome is a handheld examination device with attachments that can examine the heart, lungs, skin, ears, throat and abdomen, as well as measure body temperature, to enable remote diagnosis of acute care situations like ear infections, sore throats, fever, cold and flu, allergies, stomach aches, upper respiratory infections, coughs, rashes and more.

 

TytoHome enables users to perform comprehensive medical exams and send the captured exam information to a primary care provider for diagnosis. Users can connect with a provider 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, no matter their location.

 

“We're excited to partner with Best Buy, LiveHealth Online, American Well and regional health systems to extend our on-demand telehealth platform across the U.S., enhancing primary care delivery," Dedi Gilad, CEO and co-founder of Tyto Care, said in a release. "Tyto Care is combining increased convenience and accessibility with the power of a trusted retailer, health care providers, insurers and employers to deliver consumers the best that telehealth has to offer."

With this move, Best Buy continues to solidify its presence in healthcare. Last year Best Buy acquired GreatCall, a provider of mHealth solutions for seniors, for $800 million. Best Buy will need to continue to broaden its horizons in healthcare if it hopes to compete with Amazon’s movement in the market.

In October of 2018, Seattle, WA-based Amazon teamed up with Arcadia, a consultancy group, to launch an exclusive brand of consumer-use medical devices for diabetes and hypertension management.

Dubbed, the Choice Brand, Amazon’s medical device offerings will start with a range of blood glucose monitors and blood pressure monitors both with supporting mobile apps that offer measurement tracking, data mobility, and reminders.

A little more than a year ago, Amazon quietly hired Taha Kass-Hout, MD, a former FDA chief health informatics officer, to serve in a business development role focusing on healthcare projects.
