Can Medtech Help Address the Top 10 Patient Safety Concerns of 2022?

ECRI has released its annual list of patient safety concerns, and this year patients could really be feeling the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ECRI has shared its list of top 10 patient safety concerns in hopes of driving improvements, and the nonprofit patient safety organization believes that many of them have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

For instance, “shortages in the healthcare workforce and mental health challenges were broadly known and well-documented for years,” explained Marcus Schabacker, MD, PhD, president and CEO of ECRI, in a news release. “Both physicians and nurses were at risk of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and depression prior to 2020, but the pandemic made both issues significantly worse.”

We wonder whether medtech companies could help address these concerns and others by developing solutions to ease clinician workload.

Earlier this year, ECRI shared its list of the top 10 health tech hazards in 2022. There is some overlap, but the top 10 patient safety concerns report seems to focus on system-wide processes, as its theme this year is "Reaching Farther for Safety."
