As medtech and health-related technologies continue to demand a growing presence at South by Southwest (SXSW) the convention's Startup Accelerator put forth some exciting new medtech startups for its annual competition.
Company representatives were given a chance to do a 2-minute pitch of their company and product followed by a 5-minute Q+A session with a panel of venture capitalist judges.
Overall, the startups selected to participate in this year's accelerator were indicative of the wider trend of consumerization of healthcare and the growing demand for mobile and cloud-based connectivity in devices. The majority of the startups were also getting away from the larger market courted by fitness tracking companies and into more niche sectors of health technology such as geriatrics and pediatrics. “I was really interested in the intersection between the [health technologies] and pediatrics,” said judge Stacy Feld of Physic Ventures following the pitches. The other judges agreed. Lisa Suennen of Venture Valkyrie Consulting summed the event up best, commenting, “Consumer integration will be how medtech saves itself.”
