BUSINESS PLANNING & TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
Designed to be a flexible mechanism for regional economic growth, the Life Sciences Greenhouse Initiative was created in 2001 as part of a larger plan to ensure continued growth in the life sciences in Pennsylvania. A $100 million chunk of Pennsylvania's portion of the Master Settlement Agreement—in which tobacco companies agreed to make yearly settlement payments to states for certain liability exemptions—was used to establish three regional centers, each dedicated to identifying and addressing the needs of biomedical companies within their geography.
The three centers partner with a range of institutions, including local research universities, colleges, medical centers, economic development agencies, and companies of all sizes. They facilitate technology transfers, develop new companies, provide support for existing companies—particularly those seeking to expand or relocate—and ensure that the infrastructure necessary to support industry keeps pace with development.
