Medtech Milestones: 2010–Present

President Barack Obama signs the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), into law.

Wilson Greatbatch, inventor of the implantable pacemaker and founder of the company that would become Greatbatch Inc., dies at 92.

The U.S. Supreme Court upholds the constitutionality of the ACA’s individual coverage mandate but rules that states can’t be forced to participate in Medicaid expansion or risk losing their current Medicaid funding.

Despite the medtech industry’s efforts to quash it, the controversial ACA provision requiring companies to pay a 2.3% excise tax on medical device sales goes into effect.

More than 10 million Americans have obtained health insurance coverage since the launch of the ACA, including 8 million who purchased insurance through the ACA’s state and federal health insurance marketplaces.
