As flu season rages on there are a growing number of companies developing combination tests to detect the virus along with COVID-19.

Precision Genetics is the latest firm launching its test that detects the SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza A/B strains in upper respiratory tract specimens.

"Most current testing looks only for COVID-19. As influenza infection rates rise, testing individuals only for COVID-19 is insufficient to distinguish between various viral illnesses of the upper respiratory tract,"  John Wrangle, MD, CMO of Precision Genetics, said in a release.  "Knowing which virus a patient is infected with may help treating physicians, health professionals, and health departments decide on the best course of treatment, surveillance and contact tracing."

Recently, Cepheid has also received Emergency Use Authorization for a flu/COVID-19 test designed for use on the GeneXpert system, with results delivered in about 36 minutes.

The new combination test comes hot on the heels of Precision Genetics adding saliva collection to its existing portfolio of validated Covid-19 testing options submitted under EUA by FDA.

"Saliva collection not only reduces exposure to the healthcare professionals that will supervise the collection process but as importantly offers a less invasive and comfortable alternative for groups that might require this option," Nate Wilbourne,  CEO of Precision Genetics, said in a release.
