Minneaoplis-St. Paul is by far the greatest medtech hub in the United States' Midwest. But there are some important also-rans:

  • Chicago

Two major companies in the medical device industry, Abbott Laboratories and Baxter International, are based in Chicago's northern suburbs, and the Windy City numerically has a strong contingent of medical device employees. There is also a high concentration of academic institutions, including the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Loyola University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

  • Warsaw, IN, is the "orthopedic capital of the world," with the headquarters of soon-to-be merged Zimmer and Biomet. Johnson & Johnson's Depuy Synthes subsidiary has its joint reconstruction business in Warsaw.

  • Cleveland is known to be active in the implantables space.

  • West Michigan boasts a quickly growing medical device hub. More than $2 billion is invested annually in the life science R&D. The fourth largest medtech cluster in the Midwest, Western Michigan has a highly qualified workforce.
