Medtech Winners of 2015: Digital Health

This was the year digital health came into its own, maturing with viable business models and reimbursement coverage. Heeding calls for proof, digital health companies have started to show evidence of benefits for patients and healthcare costs.

One such company, Omada Health, published data this year showing the clinical benefits of its digital Prevent program, which is billable through a medical claims process. Omada Health and two other digital health companies, Noom and DPS Health, were given pending recognition status by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Diabetes Prevention Program.

This year, more digital health companies also received FDA clearance, including Reflexion Health, for its Vera virtual rehabilitation therapy system for joint replacement patients. At the same time, upping patient engagement through digital health and access was a major trend, highlighted recently by an NIH study at Mayo Clinic for chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.

Still, this is likely only the beginning of a bigger shift to come in digital health, as some observers and physicians say the large volume of data being generated is not yet useful.
