The medical device and diagnostic industry workforce is getting more diverse, according to our survey. Nearly one in five device professionals surveyed marked their ethnicity as something other than white or caucasian—up three percentage points over 2012. The share of women in the industry also ticked up, from 15% in 2012 to 18% this year.

The average age of medtech employees fell slightly, from 48.7 last year to 47.9 this year, though the median age remained at 49. The share of workers ages 25–29 increased three percentage points over last year, while the share of employeees 65 or older declined by two percentage points. The average number of years spent in the industry also fell from 15.7 in 2012 to 15 this year.

Medtech employees are supervising more employees—an average of 7.9 in 2013—but they're having to do with fewer financial resources. The average budget shrunk nearly 5%, to $931,000, this year.

After increasing last year, the average number of hours medtech employees work per week fell slightly—from 48.8 last year to 48.7 this year. Still, nearly half of the respondents reported working 50 hours or more each week.
