November 6, 2013
After declining 8.4% last year, the average number of full-time employees at medtech firms climbed 13.2% from 2012 to 2013, according to our survey. Medical device and diagnostic companies now employ an average of 9360 full-time employees.
Average sales volume also increased over last year, climbing 4.7%, to $2.3 billion.
With medtech market growth slowing in the U.S., it's not surprising that more companies are venturing into new markets. Seventy-one percent of this year's survey respondents said their organizations have an international presence, compared with 67% in 2013.
Consolidation among medtech firms is also ramping up. Forty percent of the employees we surveyed reported that their company was involved in a merger or acquisition over the past 12 months, compared with 35% in 2012.
