United States Vice President Kamala Harris today announced that she has picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as the VP choice for her own presidential campaign as the election enters its final sector before Nov. 4.

Walz, who was first elected as MN’s 41st governor in 2018 and won re-election in 2022, has long seen the positive impact of the medtech industry in his state. In 2023 while in office, the Biden administration federally designated MN as one of the 31 inaugural tech hubs across the country, but the state was known as a key hub long before the honor.

Positioning the state as a global center for “smart medtech” and given the moniker Medtech Hub 3.0, according to Walz, MN leads the world in innovative medical technology.

"The selection of our Minnesota MedTech Hub 3.0 in this highly competitive process is a recognition of our incredible ecosystem of private companies, regional economic development partners, healthcare providers, and world-class research institutions," he told CBS News at the time. "I'm proud that Minnesota landed this federal investment to accelerate production of next-generation smart tech, creating jobs at home and improving health care around the globe."

It helps that medtech giants including 3M, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Abbott, and more are headquartered or have major operations in the state.

In his own words, Governor Walz highlights his thoughts on the industry and its impact on MN:
