Ultralight Metallic MicrolatticesInspired by large-scale structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Judah Goldwasser, PhD at DARPA has created a strong material with an extraordinary light weight. Pictured here is such a metallic lattice sitting atop foam bubbles. The lattices could be miniaturized to the micro- or even nano-scale.Schnitzer's presentation at FutureMed hinted at medical applications for the microlattices, which also might be used for thermal insulation, shock or vibration damping, acoustic absorption, and current collectors in battery electrodes.
