Abiomed Inc. (Danvers, MA) has appointed Eric A. Rose, MD, to its board of directors. A cardiothoracic surgeon, Rose led the development of the department of surgery at Columbia University and has managed, investigated, and developed numerous complex medical technologies in fields ranging from heart transplantation to Alzheimer's disease and bioterrorism. Currently on leave as chairman of Columbia's department of surgery, Rose serves as CEO and chairman of the board of SIGA Technologies Inc., a biotechnology firm addressing bioterrorist threats. He also serves as executive vice president for life sciences at MacAndrews and Forbes Inc.
Joseph Vinhais has joined the quality team of GE Healthcare (Chalfont St. Giles, UK) as vice president of quality assurance and regulatory affairs for the company's integrated IT solutions business based in Barrington, IL. Vinhais joins GE Healthcare from Brooks Automation Software, where he served as vice president of regulatory compliance. GE Healthcare reports that Vinhais is experienced in key elements of manufacturing and IT compliance, including statistical process control, electronic device history records, electronic batch records, corrective and preventive actions, complaint handling, manufacturing execution systems, and quality management systems.
Histogenics Corp. (Waltham, MA), a tissue-regeneration company developing the NeoCart neocartilage implant and other treatments for joint repair, has appointed Steven B. Bernitz as its president and CEO. Most recently, Bernitz was senior vice president for business and commercial development at Coley Pharmaceutical Group (Wellesley, MA), where he led Coley's $515 million licensing deal with Pfizer.
Pathwork Diagnostics (Sunnyvale, CA), a genomics-based diagnostics company focused on oncology, has expanded its executive team to help prepare for commercialization of its first product and grow the company. W. David Henner, MD, PhD, has joined the company as chief medical officer, and David Craford will serve as vice president of commercial operations. Henner comes to Pathwork from biopharmaceutical company Novacea Inc. (South San Francisco, CA), where he served as vice president of oncology. Craford most recently served as vice president of business development at Affymetrix (Santa Clara, CA), where he managed corporate partnerships and brought complex new products to market.
Immunoassay developer Magnisense (Rosny sous Bois, France) has appointed Clayton Cooper Péquignot to lead its business development in North America. Currently a partner at Venstrata Consulting, Péquignot will help Magnisense find partners for licensing products using Magnisense's MIAtek technology. Péquignot previously worked as a business development manager for genomic biotechnology company Proligo (formerly Genset; Paris) before becoming a senior strategy consultant for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young (New York City). He has served as a strategic consultant and project manager for Fortune 100 clients such as AstraZeneca, Aventis, and Chiron, and has produced market analyses for several leading pharmaceutical and biotech clients.
Juvent Medical Inc. (Somerset, NJ), a provider of noninvasive therapies for the prevention and treatment of bone loss, has added Larry W. Papasan to its board of directors. Since August 2005, Papasan has been a director and chairman of the board of BioMimetic Therapeutics Inc. (Franklin, TN). From July 1991 to May 2002, Papasan served as the president of Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics (Memphis). He has also served as a director of Smith & Nephew Inc.
