LumenR Boston SciBoston Scientific said Thursday that it has bought the LumenR tissue retractor system from privately held LumenR LLC (Newark, CA).

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The LumenR system, under development, is meant to endoscopically remove colon, esophagus, or stomach lesions--providing a less invasive alternative to the conventional surgery procedures presently used to remove precancerous lesions and malignant tumors in the gastrointestinal tract.

The LumenR is meant to provide enhanced views of the lesions and a stable working environment for removal.

"We are excited about the potential of the LumenR system to improve visibility and control during ESD and EMR procedures and improve quality of life for patients," Art Butcher, senior vice president and president of endoscopy at Boston Sci, said in a news release.

"Every year, patients around the world undergo open gastrointestinal surgery that has a profound impact on their lives. By bringing this innovative technology forward, we have an opportunity for more physicians to treat patients successfully through less invasive endoscopic procedures," Butcher said.

Boston Sci officials think the LumenR system, once it is fully developed and commercialized, will provide improved endoscopic sub-mucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) procedures--providing an alternative to open surgery for procedures credited with helping to reduce colon cancer deaths.
