Noninvasive Continuous Glucose Monitoring

A smart contact lens being developed jointly by Google and Novartis could measure glucose levels in tears.

A second diagnostic technology Frost & Sullivan's Divyaa Ravishank expects to pick up steam is diabetes testing.

“We have a lot of these self-monitoring glucose meters,” she says. “In the U.S. market alone, there are 72 models, and the number is increasing.”

But such tests require blood to be drawn, and that can be painful for patients. Going forward, Ravishankar says noninvasive continuous glucose monitoring sensors will be the focus. A smart contact lens that can detect glucose in tears being jointly developed by Google and Novartis is expected to be ready for human trials sometime in 2016.
