5 Highest Fines in Medtech—Health Diagnostics Laboratory

Health Diagnostics Laboratory Inc., a provider of diagnostic testing, agreed in April 2015 to pay a $47 million fine to settle allegations of kickback payments and billing for unnecessary testing. According to the DOJ, Health Diagnostics Laboratory and two other labs allegedly paid doctors for patient referrals and also received patient referrals for unnecessary tests that were billed to government programs like Medicare.

The case was examined by numerous goverment agencies, including DOJ's Civil Division, the U.S. Attorney's Offices from South Carolina, D.C., and the Middle District of North Carolina, HSS Office of Inspector General, and FDA, among others.
