Last December, Insulet received FDA clearance for its newest Omnipod Insulin Management System, the first tubing-free insulin pump that works wirelessly to deliver insulin to diabetic patients.

The small, lightweight Omnipod integrates an insulin reservoir, tubing, infusion set, and inserter into a single pod that works wirelessly with a personal diabetes manager. The pod, which is waterproof and can be worn even while the user is exercising or asleep, provides three days of basal-bolus insulin therapy and holds 200 units of rapid-acting insulin, which Insulet says covers the requirements of 95% of patients with type 1 diabetes.

Sales have exceeded the company’s expectations, CEO Duane DeSisto said in a second-quarter 2013 earnings call. Demand for the Omnipod is up by more than half from 2012, and the company shipped a record number of initial orders in Q2—propelling quarterly revenues to top $60 million for the first time ever.
