7 Key Moments for the Digital Health Space in 2018

Here are seven key moments in the digital health space that helped moved the space forward in 2018.

Financings, acquisitions, collaborations and product validations are rapidly occurring in the space.  MD+DI  hosted a webinar discussing the Digital Health Trends. Here are seven key events that occurred in the digital health space in 2018.

  • Sweech Backs Up Diabetes Prevention App With Data

    There’s no question that Sweech’s app could have the potential to be a game changer. The company is using principles from mobile gaming, the healthcare industry, and artificial intelligence to develop a solution that can give patients insight on behaviors that could lead to diabetes. But what makes the company’s solution pretty significant is has data to support it. A study by Johns Hopkins published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research showed that patients in the trial lost a mean of 3.5 pounds and improved weekly physical activity over the course of the three-month trial. Patients in the study also saw a decrease in glycated hemoglobin levels. The data helped to give Sweech some significant validation and proved the app had the potential to be transformative. 

  • Ava Brings in $30M in Series B

    Sure there are plenty of companies in the digital health space that have out-of-the box solutions for health, but do these companies have strong support from venture capitalists.  Ava raised a whopping $30 million in its series B round for its wearable that uses big data and analytics to track a woman’s cycle. In medtech, especially a series B round, this is pretty significant. But the funding round proved the technology not only has legs, but that venture capitalist firmly support the idea of digital health. 

  • Livongo Partners With Abbott Laboratories

    If you’re Livongo, how do you make a strong statement in diabetes? You partner with one of the largest companies in the space that has one of the most transformative devices on the market. The Mountain View, CA-based company is working with Abbott Laboratories to use the Freestyle Libre Pro System in its offerings. The agreement will provide members with a visual snapshot of their glucose data, known as the Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP), offering a clearer overview of not only glucose levels, but also patterns and trends within those levels, the company said. Members also may request the AGP be shared with their personal physicians. The collaboration is important because it shows that the larger strategics definitely want to play a larger role in the digital health space, even if they don't have capability themselves. But more on that front later on in the list. 

  • AliveCor Stuns With AHA Data

    AliveCor is known for its ECG technology. The firm made news this year, when a research version of AliveCor’s mobile ECG technology could help rapid diagnosis and treatment of heart attacks, according to a study presented at the 2018 American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions in Chicago. The new research indicates that lives could be saved by allowing 12-lead equivalent ECGs to be taken in situations where traditional ECG technology may not be immediately available. The research is important because it helped shine the spotlight on AliveCor's mobile ECG offerings at a time when consumers are really starting to gravitate toward these technologies. 

  • Rock Health Releases Stunning Report

    Last year was a “record-smashing year” for digital health funding, reported Rock Health, and this year innovators seems to be strong as well. The venture fund reports that the digital health sector saw investments reach $3.4 billion through the end of June. Companies are “increasingly hitting key validation milestones,” Rock Health reported, helping the niche mature and focus on “proven outcomes.”

  • Medtronic Acquires Nutrino

    Medtronic is acquiring, Nutrino, a company that uses artificial intelligence for nutrition-related services. The medtech giant will pick up the Tel Aviv, Israel-based company for an undisclosed amount. The two are not strangers Nutrino played a role in recent U.S. product introductions from Medtronic, including the updated iPro2 myLog app used with professional CGM solutions as well as the Sugar.IQ diabetes assistant app used with the Guardian Connect smart CGM system. The acquisition is significant because it marks a larger strategic not just settling for frequent collaborations, but wanting to have a definite stake in the digital health market. 


  • Apple Gets Clearance for Mobile ECG

    This one is probably controversial. But here goes! When Apple revealed it received nods from FDA for its wearable watch to include an ECG app, it nearly split the industry.  Some said the clearance was  a game changer, others said the FDA nod wasn't anything special and there were other more effective technologies out there. But what Apple managed to do (as it always does)  is shine a huge spotlight on the digital health market and cause more consumers to become interested in health.
