Some major partnerships have been announced this week around development new population health management technology. 

Google's sister health technolgoy company Verily has announced a partnership with 3M's 3M Health Information Systems business. And IBM and Siemens Healthineers have inked their own global alliance in the field. 

"Together, with 3M's know-how and deep expertise in parsing and coding clinical data, we imagine a world where providers have precise information to guide focused improvement, and can consistently access objective, actionable feedback to make informed decisions," Tom Stanis, head of software and analytics at Verily, said in a news release. 

Matthias Platsch, head of Services at Siemens Healthineers, described the "transition to a value-based healthcare environment."

The major partnerships in health management technology come at the same time that Medicare in the U.S. continues to shift toward incentivizing health providers to be more concerned about how efficiently and effectively they manage patient populations--versus the former fee-for-service model's focus in which they counted how many devices, procedures, and services they are able to sell. The push for more efficient and effective healthcare through population management is also gaining steam elsewhere in the world, including the United Kingdom's National Health Service. 

3M, IBM, Verily, and Siemens apparently all want to take advantage of the trend by creating new technology platforms for health providers. In the case of the IBM-Siemens partnership, that even includes bringing IBM Watson Health and its AI to bear on the challenge.
