  • Seminar: Biological Safety Evaluation: Using a Risk-Based Approach for Biocompatibility

On Wednesday, June 12 from 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM, Thor Rollins, director of toxicology and E&L consulting at Nelson Laboratories LLC, will lead the half-day seminar, Biological Safety Evaluation: Using a Risk-Based Approach for Biocompatibility. This seminar will explain the risk-based approach to evaluting medical device biocompatibility, based on the most recent feedback from FDA. The instruction will include an introduction to the ISO 10993 standards and FDA guidance documents and will be divided into three parts:

    • Part 1 ISO 10993-1 Biocompatibility (Applying the New ISO 10993 Standards)
    • Part 2 – ISO 10993-18 What is E&L and How to Evaluate Changes to Medical Devices
    • Part 3- MDRs Riding out the Storm

"We are in the middle of a regulatory storm--with MDR right around the corner we now have an updated ISO10993-1. With all this change, it's more important than ever to stay up to date and learn what others are doing to prepare," Rollins told MD+DI. "In this presentation we will cover the new regulations and give case studies in what companies are doing to prepare.”

Rollins is a certified microbiologist and specializes in the selection and conduct of in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility tests. He actively speaks on biocompatibility related topics through external seminars, webinars, conferences, and tradeshows. He is a participating member on all Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) TC 194 and 10993 ISO committees and plays an active role along with the FDA and regulatory committees developing standards, discussing biocompatibility methods and voting on changes to those standards.
