NEWS & ANALYSIS

A telephone survey of all U.S. hospitals reveals single-use device (SUD) reuse is widespread and common. According to the survey, conducted by FDA last winter, nearly a quarter of all hospitals reuse SUDs that have already been used on patients.

The most commonly reused SUDs are sequential compression device sleeves, which are reused by 15.8% of all hospitals. Large hospitals are the most likely to reuse: Almost half of all hospitals with more than 250 beds reuse SUDs, as opposed to 12.3% of hospitals with 50 or fewer beds.
