9. Lukewarm: CardioMEMS

The data is mixed when it comes to St. Jude Medical's CardioMEMS technology: While the device has been shown to reduce hospitalization and improve medication management in heart failure patients, payers are not convinced that the device's high cost is worth it. Only recently, the Medicare administrative contractor Novita decided that the device would not be covered by Medicare in 11 states. 

Late last year, the company received a Form 483 letter detailing deficiencies in the company's corrective and preventive action plans for the manufacture of the CardioMEMS implantable heart monitor.
