Implanted Capsule Fights Blindness
Neurotech (Lincoln, RI) has entered phase II clinical trials for its capsule containing genetically engineered cells for treating retinitis pigmentosa and dry age-related macular degeneration. The treatment, designed to combat the degeneration of light-sensitive cells in the retina, is delivered via a capule implanted in the vitreous humor. The capsule is made of a semipermeable plastic, which allows the protein produced by the genetically engineered cells to diffuse into the retina. Neurotech's platform is "unique" and "fills a significant void in treatment options for retinal degenerative diseases," says Stephen Rose, chief research officer at the nonprofit Foundation Fighting Blindness.
