HHS has released state-by-state projections of the effect of passage or failure of the healthcare reform package, based on the surrent Senate version. According to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the projections demonstrate that “the health care status quo is not an option for our states.”
Sebelius told reporters “I think what is important, in addition to looking at the expansion of various programs and how much money is coming back to the states … is that the cost of doing nothing is a huge burden on states. It’s not only a burden that they pick up in terms of insured costs, and a sicker workforce and less preventative care, but it is a burden they pay for directly in state employee premiums.”
The Department asserts that if nothing is done, by 2019 the number of uninsured people will grow by more than 30% in 29 states and by at least 10% in every state. In addition, the amount of uncompensated care will more than double in 45 states, and businesses in 27 states will see their premiums more than double. Finally, fewer people will have coverage through employers.
There a lot cheaper and
There a lot cheaper and better ways to reform healthcare than the bills under consideration. I would suggest an incremental approach to address separately specific areas, such as, portablility, pre-existing conditions, availability across state lines, tort reform and incentives for consumers to seek the best pricing for their healthcare. Coverage for the "uninsured" could be covered by some of the above or by medicaid in true "need" cases. If Americans are willing to pay for expensive procedures, then they should be allowed to. If there is competition, then the price will drop to market levels. This whole notion of the government providing healthcare will result in rationing and higher costs. Making healthcare a right will destroy our healthcare system. Passing the types of legislation that is before congress now will bankrupt the nation.
Jim could not have said this
Jim could not have said this any more clearly. The pink slips being sent to Congress should be sending the message that there are millions of American citizens that do not like what is being written and supported by those currently in office, especially for healthcare reform.
If health care reform passes,
If health care reform passes, fewer people will have coverage through there employers also. This is because there will be less jobs. We need health reform that addresses the key problems. The current bill does not do this. The 10 year projection includes 10 years of additional taxes (first 3 without any payouts) and 7 years of paying out benefits. Wow! Great accounting to make a payback look good. Let's get this right, even if it takes time into the next campaign year. Increase competition for insurance across state lines, eliminate pre-existing conditions and add tort reform to control out of control costs.
Current bill can be summed up: We're going to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose head says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, signed by a president that also hasn't read it, and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's nearly broke. What possibly could go wrong?
