Healthcare reform could change the amount of control that doctors have over product use and give hospitals more leverage when in comes to pricing. According to The Wall Street Journal, new rules are looking for ways to align the financial interests of doctors with those of hospitals. One program, called the Acute Care Episode demonstration project, measures patient outcomes to ensure that patient care doesn't suffer when doctors try to save money. Baptist Health System (San Antonio), is part of the project and negotiated price cuts for orthopedics products through competitive bidding. The project also involved Medicare combining payments to doctors and hospitals, which allowed doctors and patients to share hospital savings. The healthcare system said it has saved about $2 million since the program started a year ago.
