The 2014 New Venture Competition is open to startups nationwide and three winners will be announced April 8.

The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) is holding its third annual New Venture Competition for medical device startups eager to win in services.

The final deadline to apply is Feb. 10 though medical technology startups who apply by Jan. 15 have their application fees waived.

Companies developing devices in Orthopedic Reconstruction, Sports Medicine, and Trauma are especially encouraged to apply. Companies need not call the Bay State home to be eligible to participate but their ventures must involved the development of a new medical device.

On Feb. 15, M2D2 will select 15 finalists, who will get the chance to pitch their ventures to a panel of judges at M2D2. Those finalists who cannot present in person are allowed to do so on Skype.

Three winners will share a total of $50,000 in marketing, legal and product development services as well as obtain lab space from M2D2 and two contest sponsors.

Last year, the three winners were Little Sparrows Technologies that is developing a neonatal phototherapy device to detect infant jaundice; Cellanyx Diagnostics, which makes a diagnostic chip and related software to help in cancer diagnosis and BioSignostix, developing minimally invasive diagnostic probes.
